Percocet is a prescription pain medication that contains a combination of two drugs: oxycodone, which is an opioid pain reliever, and acetaminophen, which is a non-opioid pain reliever. Oxycodone works by binding to specific receptors in the brain and spinal cord, reducing the perception of pain. Acetaminophen helps to increase the effectiveness of oxycodone by also reducing pain and fever. The combination of these two drugs in Percocet provides greater pain relief than either drug could provide alone. However, because it contains oxycodone, Percocet carries a risk of addiction and abuse. It should only be taken under the guidance of a doctor and according to the prescribed dosage.
