In the DSM-5, the term “substance abuse” is no longer used. Instead, the term “substance use disorder” is used to describe a pattern of substance use that leads to significant impairment or distress, as indicated by the presence of at least two of eleven possible symptoms. The severity of the substance use disorder is classified as mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the number of symptoms present. The term “substance dependence” is no longer used in the DSM-5, and the criteria for substance use disorder reflect a more unified and integrated approach to understanding problematic substance use.
