Substance abuse drugs, also known as drugs of abuse, are substances that are taken for their mood-altering effects and that have the potential for abuse and dependence. Some examples of commonly abused drugs include alcohol, cannabis, opioids (such as heroin and prescription painkillers), cocaine, amphetamines, and hallucinogens. There are also many other drugs and substances that can be abused, including inhalants, synthetic cannabinoids, and prescription drugs that are not taken as prescribed.
