when did substance abuse become recognized as a disease

The American Medical Association recognized alcoholism (alcohol addiction) as a disease in 1956. Since then, addiction to other substances has also been recognized as a disease. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which is published by the American Psychiatric Association, has included substance use disorders as a diagnostic category since the DSM-III was released in 1980.
