The term “Substance Use Disorder” (SUD) has been used in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) since the publication of the fifth edition (DSM-5) in 2013. Prior to DSM-5, the term “Substance Abuse” and “Substance Dependence” were used. The change in terminology from “Substance Abuse” and “Substance Dependence” to “Substance Use Disorder” reflects a shift in focus from the quantity and frequency of substance use to the adverse consequences associated with use.
