The first edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-I) was published in 1952 and did not include a specific category for substance abuse. However, it did include a general category for “Psychopathic Personality Disorders,” which included “Alcoholism” and “Drug Addiction” as subtypes. The second edition of the DSM (DSM-II), published in 1968, included a section on “Drug Dependence” but did not provide criteria for diagnosing specific drug-related disorders. It was not until the publication of the third edition of the DSM (DSM-III) in 1980 that a specific category for substance abuse and dependence was introduced, which included diagnostic criteria for alcohol and drug-related disorders.
