The abuse and addiction to opioids, including opium, morphine, and heroin, have been documented for centuries. However, the first modern documentation of opioid addiction in the medical literature can be traced back to the 1800s. In 1874, the term “morphinism” was coined to describe the addiction to morphine. Over time, as new opioids were developed, the understanding of opioid addiction evolved as well. Today, opioid addiction is recognized as a significant public health crisis worldwide.
